The common papaya that we know (carica papaya) is native to the forests of Southern Mexico. This type was growing on the edge of its range in an especially dry area of the yucatan. The trees are small sized and the mini fruit has an excellent taste though not much to eat. The toucans love them and it's hard to find mature fruit for that reason.
