A cousin of the pineapple, there are a few bromelia species native to Mexico commonly known as cocuixtles or piñuelas. The plants thrive under large trees and can handle brief frost. It grows for 2-3 years before making a massive 50 lb cluster of fruits that taste in-between sugarcane and pineapple. Most often used in making drinks called aqua dulce or eaten with chile and salt. This white type is considered to be sweeter then the purple type.
