Cyphomandra cajanumensis (casana)

$10.00

A true wonder and treasure, the casana is surely the sweetest of all tamarillos with a bright fragrance and juicy taste of bananas and passionfruit. It honestly puts most tree tomatoes to shame. It is quite surprising why it's not in cultivation anywhere when it has such massive commercial potential. Fruits have no detectable alkaloids or calcium stones in the flesh like many other wild and cultivated tamarillos. This species is clear cut in its habitat to grow crops though there is a occasional farmer who protects and nurtures them in its high Andean range. The plants grow to about 20 feet, they are native to ecuadorian cloud forests avove 9000 feet, above frost zone so they can handle brief frost. Pursuing this fruit was among the most challenging pursuits, hiking in knee high mud for 4 hours and driving the notorious mountain roads known as “Caminos de muerte” (roads of death). The greater the risk the greater the reward I say!
